Creatures of the Night

Character Design

We crafted a race of invading reptilic aliens to promote and populate the Zoo’s marquee haunted house.

Drawing inspiration from the attributes of their komodo dragon sidekicks, our aliens and their leader Aster sported green scales, slitted eyes, and a forked tongue. They were aimed at capturing the attention of older kids in particular during Creatures of the Night, where they anted up the Halloween fun with a dose of sci-fi action.

The campaign illustrated Aster and his bank invading an ambiguous governmental compound, in keeping with the narrative of their house and in the style of pulp era comics. UFOs shone on the silhouetted creatures, while the Aster’s sparkling scales accentuated his foreshortened reach.

We originally concepted a range of characters, including a clever biped reptile who’s finally shedding their zookeeper disguise, a retro-futuristic warrior in komodo-inspired armor, and a more familiar komodo meets gray/green men hybrid. Landing on a composite of the three, we finalized Aster and paired him with a direct address narration in the style of a commanding general to tell the story.

TV

Moving to digital, we abbreviated the narrative told through our out-of-home and TV, utilizing motion to maintain more of the story where possible. Our rich media display in particular, allowed us to include a dose of interactivity with press-prompted motion.
